SONGS & PAINTINGS INSPIRED BY THE NOVEL "MOBY DICK OR THE WHALE" BY HERMANN MELVILLE
This album is based of the novel “Moby Dick or The Whale” by Herman Melville. Published in 1851 the book became one of the most important novels of American literature. The story is open to many interpretations. It can be read as a thrilling sea story or an examination of the conflict between man and nature. Depending on the point of view and with changing political atmosphere Captain Ahab can be seen as a Promethean hero or a forefather of the twentieth-century totalitarian dictators.
Above all – Moby-Dick is language: „Nautical, biblical, Homeric, Shakespearean, Miltonic, cetological, alliterative, fanciful, colloquial, archaic and unceasingly allusive“. Melville stretches grammar, quotes well-known or obscure sources, or swings from calm prose to high rhetoric, technical exposition, seaman’s slang, mystic speculation, or wild prophetic archaism. His three most important sources, in order, are the Bible, Shakespeare and Milton. Finally this is the work of a man who is at once philosopher, painter, and poet…
FEATURING LEW SOLOFF
From his birth place of New York City, United States, he studied trumpet at the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School. He was an integral part of Blood, Sweat & Tears (1968 – 1973). The song „Spinning Wheel“ is his signature piece and 9 Golden records and 1 Grammy in 1969 his reward. He worked with many famous artists in various genres. Amongst them: Gil Evans – whom he calls his „musical goodfather“, Tony Bennett, Elvis Costello, Marianne Faithful, Aretha Franklin, Lou Reed, Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Barbra Streisand just to name a view – read more at: www.lewsoloff.com
He was among a handful of trumpeters capable of playing demanding lead trumpet parts while also contributing improvisational solos and of playing any music styles, which made him an in-demand session player for commercials and soundtracks (The Big Lebowski, Carlito’s Way, Meet Joe Black etc.). “I have the ability to play every one of my gigs as if it were my last.” he ones said. As true as I stand here –
he always did so! The sound of his playing fell silent on March 8, 2015 – He died at the age of 71 in New York – rest in peace dear friend.
THE PAINTINGS
Sven meticulously created atmospheric paintings for the songs; including a dyptichon (Sonnet No. 60) and a tryptichon (The Chase).
Entrepreneur Frank Otto supported this project financially and also helped with the paintings – Sven & Frank spent 2 weeks in a hut to complete 19 pictures in the format 1.80 x 1.80 m.
All pictures are soon available for sale in our shop, which will be opened shortly.
We are happy to announce, that the painting of “You Cannot Hide the Soul” was auctioned in the Millerntor Gallery,
Hamburg and brought in proceeds of 1,800 EUR, which we donated in full to the NGO Viva Con Agua.
